Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could be about to get himself an interesting transfer.

Henderson is reportedly looking to move away from Saudi Arabia after just half-a-season with Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq.

So far, the rule has been ran over a potential return to Liverpool, as well as a shock move to Chelsea.

But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano today, Henderson could be about to join Dutch heavyweights Ajax. Taking to X this afternoon, Romano revealed that the four-time European Cup winners are showing ‘concrete interest’ in the 33-year-old.

“Ajax are showing concrete interest in signing Jordan Henderson in case he’ll get green light to leave Al Ettifaq in January transfer window,” reports the transfer expert.

“There are several clubs keen, waiting for Saudi club decision — but Henderson is looking for options and Ajax are there.”

Ajax interested in Henderson

This isn’t what we saw happening when Henderson made his desire to leave Al Ettifaq public.

The England international is reportedly angling for a move back home to the Premier League, and that had looked a more likely possibility.

But the interest from Ajax is absolutely intriguing. The Amsterdam side are actually having a really poor season. Although they’ve picked up recently, they currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie.

For a club used to winning the championship, that’s far from being good enough.

As a result, perhaps they see Henderson and his reputation as a standard-setter as someone who can help turn things around.

From a Liverpool point of view, it would be preferential to see the former skipper turn out in another country rather than a potential rival.

Ajax is also a fantastic club with a grand history of employing some top, top players. On the back of a dreadful move to the Middle East, this one should be a bit of a pinch-yourself one for Henderson.

As Romano says, interest is there from a number of other – so far unnamed clubs. It isn’t a done deal yet. Interesting times ahead for our old general.
