Chris Sutton shares whether he thinks Liverpool would re-sign Jordan Henderson this month

Barely six months into his stay in Saudi Arabia, former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is looking for a way out.

Henderson has been in the news this week as he attempts to cut short his two-year deal with Al Ettifaq after just half a season.

With the 33-year-old reportedly keen to return to the Premier League, it remains to be seen what options are on the table for him. Surprisingly, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has already publicly addressed the chances of Henderson ending up at Stamford Bridge.

And speaking on BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club last night, pundit Chris Sutton has now analysed the England international’s chances of re-joining Liverpool.

“Would Klopp take him back at Liverpool? Don’t think so,” Sutton dismissed. “Arsenal? No. He couldn’t go to Manchester United could he? Not even he’s that daft. Even after going to Saudi if he ended up at Manchester United that would be daft.

“He could go to Chelsea youth team, their development squad, but that’s unlikely. I don’t see this as being as easy as it sounds.”

Henderson short on options

Let’s put this to bed right now. There’s absolutely no chance of Jordan Henderson returning to Liverpool this winter. None.

Throughout Klopp’s tenure at Anfield, there have always been rumours that former Reds may return to play under him once again.

Philippe Coutinho was linked with a move back right up until he signed for Aston Villa in 2022. Suggestions that Roberto Firmino may end his own Saudi stay and don the famous red again are also circulating.

But through it all, Klopp has never expressed an interest in a player coming back for a second bite of the cherry.

Whether that’s deliberate or not, who knows. But the way Liverpool do business currently would not leave much room for veterans of the past getting a second chance.

For Henderson, it’s hard to imagine that he doesn’t regret leaving Anfield during the summer. Although the manager had told him he would no longer be first choice, there was still a big role for him to play.

Giving that up for a payday in the Middle East looked ill-advised at the time. Now, it looks downright crazy. He’ll surely be doing what he can to make this unlikely Anfield U-turn a possibility.

While we don’t think that will happen, Henderson may well eventually get his move back to the Premier League this month. But Sutton’s right; it absolutely won’t be to Liverpool.
