Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi has suggested that one of his former teammates is the strongest player in the world.
Origi became a hero at Liverpool for the part he played in the Champions League win back in 2019. Ever since then, the Belgian has been synonymous with the Reds.
So, perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that when asked to build his perfect footballer for Goal on Instagram, Divock opted for one of his old pals at Anfield.
Before that though, the Nottingham Forest forward gave his answers on who he’d select as the left-foot of this imaginary footballer – Lionel Messi of course. Right-foot? Cristiano Ronaldo. Speed? The forever Liverpool-linked Kylian Mbappe.
And for strength, Divock? Who else but Virgil van Dijk. It doesn’t get much better than the Dutchman.
Origi finished off his dream player with skills of Neymar and the football IQ of Van Dijk’s mate at Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne. Some player, that.
Origi hails Van Dijk strength
There are many strings to his bow as the best centre-back in the game, but Virgil’s strength is one of his main attributes.
Built as pretty much exactly what you’d want in a defender, the 32-year-old won’t be bullied by any striker around.
On top of that – as Danny Murphy said this week – Virgil is also ‘really quick’. Strength and speed mixed into one player. What more could you want.
For a time last season it had looked like these attributes may have just started to desert Liverpool’s No.4.

But in 2023/24 Van Dijk has come back with a bang. At the halfway stage of the campaign, there’s a good argument that he’s been the Reds’ best player so far.
If Ibrahima Konate sees this from Divock, he might have some grumbles. The Frenchman is another incredibly strong member of the Liverpool squad.
But just as in other areas of his game, Ibou still has so much he can learn from Virgil.
As his powers wane over the next few years, Van Dijk will eventually cede this title to someone else. But not yet.
