‘Don’t see a weakness’… Danny Murphy says 32-year-old Liverpool player has been amazing this season

Every player at Liverpool has played a part in them sitting top of the Premier League tree this New Year’s.

But amongst a much better collective performance this season, there have still been one or two standouts for the Reds so far in 2023/24.

One of those has been Mohamed Salah, who has been receiving all kinds of lavish praise this week. Another, perhaps more under the radar success story has been new captain Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk has been fantastic since day one of the campaign. As a result, TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has claimed that the Dutchman is a shoo-in for his Premier League Team of the Season so far.

“I think he’s [Van Dijk] got back to his best and that’s why I’ve put him in,” said the former Liverpool midfielder, to the surprise of host Jim White.

“He’s a huge reason Liverpool are sat on top of the table. He looks really strong again, really quick, motivated. All of the things we saw of him when he was getting all the praise, he’s back to it. I don’t see a weakness in his game now.”

Van Dijk takes the plaudits

Murphy is absolutely bang on with his appraisal of Van Dijk’s season so far. After a difficult season last time out, plenty had been quick to write him off. With some level of glee, it must be added.

But Virgil has roared back. The 32-year-old has been Liverpool’s best player a number of times already.

The dominant display away to Crystal Palace was a particular highlight, one which left Jamie Carragher raving about him.

In a season full of brilliant – and incredibly solid – performances, Van Dijk has been a joy to watch.

Having spent a year pretty much out of the conversation, it’s now clear that Liverpool’s No.4 is once again the very best defender in the world.

If the Reds are to maintain their title push, and indeed their hunt to win other trophies, then their captain is going to be key.

At his best, Van Dijk is a game-changer for any team. The Netherlands international can really be the difference if he’s at it.

Thankfully so far this season, he has been. What a player, what a centre-half. The best in the league – and probably the world – this year by a mile.
