Pundit claims Liverpool have another ‘spectacular’ passer as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool have a ‘spectacular’ passer of the ball who’s name isn’t Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold is widely seen as one of the best passers anywhere in the world currently. Only yesterday, former Reds striker Dean Saunders labelled him a ‘genius’ with a ball at his feet.

But according to former Middlesbrough midfielder Robbie Mustoe, Liverpool have another ridiculously good passer within their ranks: Mohamed Salah.

Speaking on NBC Sports this morning, Mustoe suggested that Salah’s passing is perhaps a little underrated.

“There’s another one here [against Newcastle on Monday] where he flicks the ball with the outside of his let foot,” said the pundit.

“There isn’t many now that can weight a key pass or an assisting pass from Mo Salah that we’ve seen all season long, that’s spectacular as well. A few seasons ago there was a little argument with Sadio Mane, [about] is he greedy. Well, you’re seeing now that he’s a complete attacking forward player.”

Salah gets ‘spectacular’ praise

It isn’t as though Salah’s passing prowess is necessarily ignored, but it certainly is an underrated part of his game.

Although assists aren’t always a good barometer for the quality of a player’s vision and ball-striking, they do give an indication into the kind of chances they create.

So far this season, Salah has eight assists to his name in the Premier League. As well as being joint top scorer alongside Erling Haaland, the Egyptian also joins Ollie Watkins as the player with the most pre-goal passes in the division. That’s remarkable.

When you watch clips of Liverpool back this season, you realise that there are also so many other occasions where brilliant passes from Mo have been squandered by one of his teammates.

All being fair, the 31-year-old could – and probably should – have a handful more assists.

Many of these aren’t just mere lay-offs or some such largely irrelevant set-up either. Salah’s assist for Cody Gakpo on Monday was absolutely beautiful. He loves the ‘trivela’ pass with the outside of his boot and has become a master of it.

Of course, when you score as many as Mo does, it’s not your passing that you’ll be remembered for. But perhaps it should be. There are many strings to our legendary No.11’s bow after all.

Trent is still the No.1 passer in this Liverpool team and probably always will be. Salah isn’t far behind, though. It’s about time people started to realise that.
