Jamie Carragher says two Liverpool players were simply brilliant against Crystal Palace

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has shared his thoughts on the Reds’ 2-1 win over Crystal Palace today.

It wasn’t a good performance from Liverpool, but they got the job done. The Reds’ may have benefitted from a soft red card for Palace’s Jordan Ayew, but they still had to step up and win the game.

Despite the disappointing display, there were still one or two good performers from Liverpool. And taking to X following full-time, Carragher said two players in particular deserved credit.

“Liverpool top of the Premier League but we have to improve defensively!” wrote the 45-year-old.

“Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker outstanding again. They have been doing some very heavy lifting this season. Mo Salah (crown emoji). Legend”

Van Dijk and Alisson step up

It’s fair for Carragher to say that both Van Dijk and Alisson have been doing plenty of ‘heavy lifting’ for Liverpool this season.

Along with probably Salah, the two have been the Reds’ best players all season long.

Even on Saturday, with their teammates really struggling to get going, Van Dijk and Alisson made sure they were at their game.

Without Alisson, it’s fair to say that Liverpool don’t win this game today. They probably don’t even get a point.

Firstly, his save from Jefferson Lerma in the first-half is one of the Brazilian’s best ever. Some will say it was a comfortable height and sell within his grasp, but the reactions to keep that out were absolutely brilliant. Without doing him down, it’s perhaps unlikely that Caoimhin Kelleher saves that. Not many ‘keepers would have.

And then, in the dying seconds of the game, Ali came up big again. Joachim Andersen may have potentially been offside when he headed Michael Olise’s free-kick goalward, but the ‘keeper didn’t know that. It wasn’t the most difficult save he’ll ever make, but Alisson didn’t let the ball squirm through.

As for Virgil, he’s just immense isn’t he. Granted, he was a little lucky to get away with giving away a penalty in the first-half.

Had Wataru Endo not been fouled in the build-up, it would have gone down as the captain’s mistake. Thankfully, in the end it was nothing doing.

We’re so lucky to have these two marshalling our defence. Another big, big display.
