Sami Hyypia has now said that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is now back to being the best defender in the world.
The 32-year-old centre-back has returned to top form this season with Liverpool heading into Christmas just one point off top spot having drawn with Arsenal this weekend.
And Van Dijk has been key to Liverpool’s success, with the Dutch international taking on the role as captain like a duck to water and putting on some huge performances this season.

And speaking to the Daily Mail, former Anfield defender has labelled Van Dijk as the best defender in the world, having lost the title during his post-ACL injury days.
Hyypia said: “I watched the game in here [Liverpool vs Manchester United]. The game is quicker than it was in my time. I don’t know how well I would cope with the tempo now.
“I love to watch Virgil van Dijk. He is the best, he has everything. If I was as quick as him then I’d have been the best in the world, but I wasn’t.”
Virgil van Dijk can lead Liverpool to success

Van Dijk has been a mainstay for Liverpool ever since signing for the Reds, and this season could prove to be the defender’s biggest yet with the Anfield side.
A quadruple is still on for Jurgen Klopp’s side having now emerged as the favourites for the League Cup and UEFA Europa League, with the Premier League and FA Cup more than achievable for Liverpool.
And if Liverpool are to make history, Van Dijk’s form will be huge, with the Dutchman showing this season that he is now back to his best.
Indeed, praise from Hyypia shows just how good the centre-back has been this year, and Van Dijk will want to bring silverware back to Anfield come the end of this season.
