Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have three players who are ‘among the best in world football’

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool currently have three of the very best players in the world.

The Reds are having a good time of things right now. Despite last night’s disappointing 2-1 Europa League loss against Union Saint-Gilloise, they’re top of the Premier League and on an upward curve.

In amongst that, some of their star names have been in irresistible form. And previewing Sunday’s clash with Manchester United for The Telegraph today, Carragher has picked out three who stand head and shoulders above most in the country, and in the world.

“Liverpool go into it looking like they know what direction they are going, while United have stalled,” began the Reds legend. “The bottom line is all the class is in Klopp’s team with a goalkeeper, centre-back and goalscorer among the best in world football.

“Five years ago, the signings of Salah, Van Dijk and Alisson transformed a side on the cusp of success into winners. Despite my reservations about the side’s current form, there will be no lessening of expectations with world class players of that calibre around.

“As a team, Liverpool have not played like champions-in-waiting yet, but individually Van Dijk, Alisson and Salah are up there with the Premier League’s best performers.”

From Jurgen Klopp’s selection for last night’s game, it’s clear that the Liverpool manager agrees with Carragher here.

In failing to name any of Van Dijk, Alisson or Salah in the travelling squad to Belgium, Klopp highlighted exactly who his most important players are.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was also left out and joins the ‘world-class’ trio in being one of four players Carragher has previously deemed to be ‘untouchable’ at Liverpool.

But Trent has perhaps not been quite at his best for parts of this season. The other three have probably been the Reds’ top performers since day one of 2023/24.

Salah usually takes the headlines, and after his 200th goal for the club on Saturday that has been true again this week.

But Alisson and Van Dijk are widely seen as the two players who truly transformed Liverpool, and the pair have once again been phenomenal.

After a drop in output last season, you can see just what a difference an in-form Van Dijk makes to the Reds. Both Alisson and Salah were brilliant during 2022/23, but with Virgil off the boil, Liverpool couldn’t raise their game.

If they’re going to win the big one this year then they’ll need all three of their biggest guns firing. Thankfully, they’ve been locked, loaded and ready for action all season long so far.
