Liverpool are furious with what’s been going on with their £8m player this season

Liverpool are not happy with the way Fabio Carvalho’s loan at RB Leipzig has played out this season.

Carvalho joined Leipzig over the summer after struggling through a difficult first year with Liverpool. With the German side playing a high-octane style of football at a high level, it looked like an exciting move for the 21-year-old.

But, six months on, the dream loan has turned into a nightmare. Having barely featured for Leipzig, news broke yesterday that Liverpool are looking to bring Carvalho back to Anfield. Expanding on that today in his Daily Briefing, journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Reds are furious over Leipzig’s treatment of their youngster. However, the Bundesliga club will not let Carvalho go without a fight.

“As reported yesterday, Liverpool have opened talks over bringing Fabio Carvalho back from his loan at RB Leipzig after a lack of playing time with the Bundesliga club,” Romano reports. “Unsurprisingly, Liverpool are not happy that Carvalho has barely played for Leipzig – they couldn’t find much room for him at Anfield last season so a loan move like this could have been highly beneficial for this talented young player, but it hasn’t worked out so far.

“As it happens, Leipzig have many players in that position, so that’s why it has proven difficult for Carvalho to start a lot of games. Still, Leipzig will fight to keep Fabio at the club, but Liverpool want him back because they are not happy.

“The next few games could be important to determine a final decision on the player, but in any case I’m not sure he’d stay with the Liverpool squad if he came back; it could be that they find a new loan move for him, but nothing has been decided yet.”

Liverpool not happy with Leipzig

This turn of events is a real shame on a couple of different levels. Of course, first and foremost, you have to feel for Carvalho himself.

Upon joining Liverpool last summer, the former Fulham youngster looked to have the world at his feet. Coming off the back of a wonderful breakout season in the Championship, Carvalho seemed a steal at just under £8m.

However, with the Reds having their worst campaign in some time, the Portugal U21 international never really got going.

Unable to see a place for him in his squad this year, Jurgen Klopp took the decision to send him out.

That alone must have been hard to come to terms with for Carvalho. But, nevertheless, Leipzig are usually a great club for a young player to be at. Positivity should still have been there. Now though, Liverpool’s No.28 must be really wondering where he goes from here.

It’s nice that the Red Bull club still want to keep him. But, really, what’s the point in that? Unless he suddenly starts getting game time, he’s better off back at Liverpool.

From our point of view, we’d love to see Fabio brought back in and given the chance to thrive in a much better functioning Liverpool side. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look as though we’ll get that opportunity. Whether Leipzig let him back or not, it doesn’t look like Carvalho will spend the rest of 23/24 at Anfield.

Whatever happens though, Liverpool – and Fabio himself – have a right to be furious at how things have gone at the Red Bull Arena. The two clubs generally seem to have good relations that have been mutually beneficial. Let’s hope this little hiccup doesn’t change that.
