Liverpool 21-year-old enduring ‘hard’ time on loan for simple reason

Christian Falk has now offered an update on why Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho is finding it ‘hard’ on loan at RB Leipzig since joining the Bundesliga side in the summer.

Die Roten Bullen reached an agreement to loan the 21-year-old from the Reds days after the transfer of Dominik Szoboszlai. RB Leipzig sought to sign Carvalho in a separate deal to help manager Marco Rose replace the Hungarian. Liverpool paid £60m to sign the 22-year-old.

Szoboszlai was a key player at the Red Bull Arena last season with six goals and eight assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances. No player registered more assists in the German top-flight for the Saxony-based squad. Yet Rose has rarely trusted Carvalho to carry the creative burden.

Rose has seldom trusted Carvalho on loan at RB Leipzig

Despite being available for all four of RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga fixtures so far this term, Rose has only fielded Carvalho twice. He has further only afforded the Portugal U21 talent a mere 32 minutes. Both of the maestro’s games were as a substitute for six and 26-minute outings.

Carvalho made a further 12-minute cameo in the Supercup against Bayern Munich for his RB Leipzig debut. But Rose has preferred the creative skills of Dani Olmo in the Liverpool gem’s best position. While Xavi Simons has led Die Roten Bullen with four assists, plus three goals.

Liverpool and Carvalho hoped a year on loan with RB Leipzig would help the Fulham product get back on track. His transfer to Anfield in July 2022 yielded 21 appearances under Jurgen Klopp in 2022/23. But he only played for 637 minutes for three goals across all competitions.

Why is Liverpool gem Carvalho struggling to get minutes?

Falk believes it is simply now down to Rose playing Olmo and RB Leipzig’s more experienced players that Carvalho is finding it tough on loan from Liverpool. But expectations are high in Saxony that he will start next Wednesday – not at Borussia Monchengladbach this Saturday.

Falk wrote in his CaughtOffside column: “In Fabio Carvalho’s position, Dani Olmo normally plays. He’s injured but there are other more experienced players available like Emil Forsberg and Christoph Baumgartner. So, it’s not easy for him.

‘It’s hard for him, at the moment, as there’s plenty of competition… Marco Rose will rotate his team in the coming matches and everyone thinks Carvalho will get his chance in the starting XI when Leipzig play Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB Pokal.”
