Liverpool have been linked with making the perfect signing for their defence, he’s ‘spectacular’

Over the next month-and-a-half, plenty of defenders will be linked with a move Liverpool.

Following Joel Matip’s season-ending injury, the Reds are suddenly looking a little light at the back. With the January transfer window just around the corner, they have the chance to put that right.

So, the favourite of supporters would perhaps be Sporting centre-back Goncalo Inacio. And for good reason. But following some exciting transfer news yesterday, Liverpool fans should be crossing their fingers for the arrival of someone else: Ronald Araujo.

It isn’t the first time Araujo has been linked with the Reds. He was seemingly a top target for Jurgen Klopp before signing a new deal at Barcelona in 2022.

Ever since the Uruguayan put pen to paper at Camp Nou though, it’s felt like an impossible task to prise him away from Barca. As per 90min on Monday though, there is a possibility that Araujo could leave. And Liverpool are in the mix.

If there really is a chance of the 24-year-old jumping ship at Barcelona, then there’s not even a question. Liverpool have to be there. Araujo ticks every box they could possibly want in a new centre-back signing.

Liverpool find their perfect solution

If he isn’t already, then Araujo has the potential to be one of the best central defenders in the world.

Barca boss Xavi called him ‘spectacular’ back in 2021. Although Xavi was not a defender himself, he played with some great ones. He knows a player when he sees one.

As a result, it does seem curious as to why Araujo would be allowed to leave the Camp Nou. However, having reportedly been flirting with Bayern of late [Florian Plettenberg], it does seem like a genuine possibility.

Interestingly, the Uruguayan has only started seven of Barca’s 16 La Liga games this season. All is not quite as rosy as it seems. For Liverpool, that could be good news.

In Darwin Nunez, Liverpool could also hold an ace up their sleeve in terms of convincing Araujo to join.

The two are teammates for the Uruguayan national team and are obviously relatively close. With Darwin now fully settled on Merseyside, he could extoll the virtues of the Reds to his countryman.

Should that happen, Liverpool will be set for the next half-decade at least. Ibrahima Konate and Araujo looks like a brilliant partnership to take the Reds beyond the Virgil van Dijk years.

We still won’t be holding our breath too hard though and other, more feasible links are sure to come up in the meantime. But there won’t be one put forward that would be a better fit at Liverpool. If the Reds want the best, then go out and get Araujo.
