Liverpool reportedly failed last year in an ambitious move to sign FC Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.
According to Sport, the Reds, as well as Chelsea, both made ‘huge’ contract offers to sign the 24-year-old defender, who at the time looked likely to leave the Catalan giants as a free agent.
As we now know, though, Araujo remained with Barcelona, signing a new contract with the club and playing a key role as Xavi Hernandez’s side won the La Liga title last season.

Labelled by Xavi as a ‘spectacular’ player, Araujo has established himself as one of the best defenders in world football and a potential captain one day for Barcelona.
And for Liverpool, it’s perhaps no real surprise why the defender rejected a move to Anfield, with Araujo settled in Barcelona and already at arguably the biggest club in the world.
Indeed, Araujo would have been a world-class addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side, though the odds of the defender actually moving to the Premier League felt low.
Liverpool were never going to stand a chance in signing Araujo

Araujo has established himself as one of Barcelona’s most important players in the Xavi era, and Liverpool were never going to stand a chance in signing the defender last year.
The Uruguay international has found a perfect home for himself in Barcelona, and even though Liverpool’s offer might have been immense, Araujo was never going to leave Catalonia.
For Liverpool, their search for a world-class young defender continues, with Araujo clearly off the table after what happened last year.
