Liverpool have already made a decision about whether or not to ‘push’ to sign PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.
The Reds have been strongly linked with a move for Mbappe, who as it stands will leave the French champions on a free transfer next summer.
But according to journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, Liverpool have decided not to enter the race to sign Mbappe.
“Been told that Liverpool is NOT pushing for Kylian Mbappe,” Plettenberg reports. “His transfer in summer 2024 is not an issue at this stage.
“PSG, still totally relaxed as they are financially secured (contractually) for his possible departure.
“Real Madrid is still the most realistic destination for him, either next year or the year after.”
Liverpool not plotting Mbappe swoop
The more cynical amongst us will perhaps argue that this should not even be a topic for Liverpool.
Although Mbappe is obviously a superb player – and reportedly has a soft spot for the Reds – he simply isn’t a realistic target.
Nevertheless, if the 24-year-old is ever to make good on his annual threats to leave his hometown club, then next summer feels like the time for that to happen.
Without a transfer fee, there is no reason for Liverpool to rule themselves out. Yes, his wages and the affiliated costs of the signing would be massive. But the Reds are one of a pool of perhaps five or six clubs who should be able to afford that regardless.

In terms of sporting merit, it’s hard to argue against what Mbappe could bring to Liverpool. Irrespective of the needs of the squad, if there’s a chance to snare a player like that for nothing, then you have to take a run at it.
As a result, no matter how unlikely it feels, it’s hard to be at least a little disappointed by this latest update.
There’s still a way to run in this saga, though. With Mbappe free to speak to other clubs from next month, expect rumours to be flying here and there for a while yet.
Until there’s categorically no chance of this happening, some will still believe Liverpool could pull off an almighty coup and bring Mbappe in. But it’s a good sign – if any were needed – that Reds supporters shouldn’t hold their collective breath.
