Liverpool are definitely interested in signing £87m player, there’s no chance he’s staying

Liverpool are starting to be linked with a number of attacking players as the January transfer window looms.

Today has been a particularly busy day in that respect, with links to Kylian Mbappe once again resurfacing. Claims that Liverpool are also looking at RB Leizpig’s Lois Openda have been circulating too, as Jurgen Klopp seeks to refresh his forward line.

And now, German journalist Florian Plettenberg has just made it a hat-trick. Taking to X this morning, Plettenberg confirmed that the Reds are indeed one of the teams ‘in’ for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

However, with Leverkusen said to be resigned to the 20-year-old’s eventual departure, Bayern Munich are claimed to currently hold the upper hand.

“More on Florian Wirtz: Bayer 04 hopes that he will stay for one more season. Bosses are convinced that he will definitely leave the club, at the latest, in the summer of 2025,” Plettenberg reports.

“All big clubs are in (Real [Madrid], Man City, Liverpool, Man Utd… If they can really afford the package, FC Bayern has the best chances! Wirtz has not given any club the commitment, he is 100% focused on Leverkusen.”

Wirtz on Liverpool radar

Liverpool’s interest in Wirtz has seemingly been rumbling on for a little while now.

But whereas previously the Germany international was perhaps a more slightly under the radar target, that’s been blown out of the water this season.

Wirtz has been one of the best players in the Bundesliga. Under the expert guidance of Xabi Alonso, the young forward is flourishing.

He always looked like having the potential to be a truly top player. But having suffered a serious knee injury in 2022, it wasn’t clear whether he would then fulfil that.

Thankfully, Wirtz seems to have returned even better than ever.

With goals and assists coming regularly this campaign, it’s no surprise to hear that the big boys are all over him.

Given the illustrious nature of the names said to be chasing Wirtz, it’s also no shock that Leverkusen are reportedly demanding around £87m to sell their No.10.

In truth, that figure – which was plucked at the start of the season – may now be even bigger. If it does go to those lengths, it’s difficult to see how Bayern could match the Premier League clubs. For Liverpool though, that would probably mean them bowing out, too. Either way, this race is only just starting.
