Robbie Savage suggests £50m Arsenal player is better than Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold

Arsenal defender Ben White would be Liverpool’s starting right-back if he made the switch to Anfield.

Although signed by Arsenal as a £50m centre-back, White has been deployed at right-back for much of the past 18 months. The 26-year-old has done a reasonable job as the Gunners attempt to become genuine title challengers.

And according to pundit Robbie Savage, he’s shown enough that if he were to join Liverpool, he’d be a starter for Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live via TeamTALK, Savage suggested that White would start over current right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Would Ben White make Liverpool stronger in that position [right-back]?” queried the former Wales international, following a call from a Reds fan praising the Arsenal man.

“I think he has played the majority at right-back for Arsenal. Ben White would be first-choice. How much would he cost? They paid £50m for him, and he is playing in a team that challenged Man City last season and only lost one game in the league this season, how much would he cost?”

Savage makes White suggestion

We’re used to seeing some quite ludicrous takes from pundits in this country, but this is right up there from Savage.

White is a very good player, let’s get that out of the way. He has indeed done a fine job for Arsenal at right-back and would start for plenty of team in the Premier League and across Europe.

However, one of those teams is not Liverpool. The Reds are blessed with one of the finest right-backs of a generation. There isn’t a single player currently playing in the Premier League who should start ahead of Alexander-Arnold.

Of course, the 25-year-old has his flaws, of which the media are often very quick to remind us. But as a whole package, not many can touch him.

White certainly isn’t one who falls into that category.

Solid and dependable as a defender and perhaps better than he’s given credit for going forward, the former Brighton man is fine, but he’s no Trent.

Can you imagine him effortlessly pinging perfect 50, 60-yard passes across the pitch as Alexander-Arnold does on a weekly basis? We certainly can’t.

When Liverpool are finally looking for a player to replace Trent, it’s going to be a long old search. Thankfully, they shouldn’t have to do that for some years to come. When they do, White won’t be on the list.
