ESPN pundit claims there are still three goalkeepers better than Alisson in world football right now

Alisson Becker is still playing catch-up to three goalkeepers in the world of football.

The Liverpool goalie has been in exceptional form for the pat 18 months or so, leading to plenty of claims that he’s the best on the planet right now.

But according to former West Ham United ‘keeper Shaka Hislop, this isn’t actually the case. Asked by ESPN FC to name his top five players in the world at this moment, Hislop said he felt compelled to put a goalie in, but perhaps couldn’t justify it.

“You know I have to throw a goalkeeper in there somehow, but even then, I’m struggling,” said the pundit.

“For me, the best goalkeeper in the world is Thibaut Cortouis, but he’s out for the season or most of it. I think the best goalkeeper in the world for quite some time has been Manuel Neuer, but he went skiing and we all know what happened there.

“Ter Stegen, who I probably would have had as third, is having as poor time right now as he has – certainly in a Barcelona shirt.

“So, Alisson is the standout goalkeeper, fit goalkeeper, in world football right now. But I’m not sure who else I can really see, which other goalkeeper I can really shoehorn in there somehow.”

Alisson overlooked by Hislop

This is a poor take from Hislop. So, what he’s essentially saying is that Alisson is the best right now, but only by default? We’re not having that.

Sure, all three of the ‘keepers he mentions are right at the top of their trade. In the case of Courtois and certainly Neuer, they’ve been the undisputed best at one point or another.

But right now, if you actually watch Alisson, this isn’t even a question. There’s a reason the 31-year-old was once labelled as the ‘Messi of goalkeepers,’ he’s on a different level.

You get the feeling that if Ali played for Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich, this wouldn’t even be a debate.

Because he’s playing for the Reds, in the Europa League, his greatness is a little overlooked.

That’s fine by us, we know just how good he is. And although he made a slight error last weekend against Brighton, he’s already been one of Liverpool’s top performers again this season.

If Madrid, Barca or Bayern had the chance to swap their goalies for Alisson, we’re pretty sure that they’d take it. Thankfully for us, the big man loves Liverpool. Put some respect on his name.
