David Seaman says 31-year-old Liverpool player got completely ‘lost’ vs Brighton

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was caught in the wrong position for Brighton’s opening goal on Sunday.

Alisson has once again been brilliant so far this season, but the Brazilian was one of a couple of Liverpool players at fault for Simon Adingra’s goal.

Having come way out of his area, Alisson played a sideways pass to Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman then sold Alexis Mac Allister a little short, allowing Adingra to nip in and fire home, with the goalie still trying to get back into position.

It was poor from Alisson, who should have been much more alert to the danger and gotten back in the middle of the goal. And commenting on the mistake for the Seaman Says podcast, former England ‘keeper David Seaman said the 31-year-old looked ‘lost’ in that moment.

“Alisson playing it out from the back, the defender losing it, and he’d be totally out of position,” explained the pundit. “You know because of the way the ball went it, it wasn’t right down the post, it was in the goal a little bit. He just lost all his bearings. And that’s what happens when you are outside your area and trying to get back. I always tried to use my penalty spot as my guide.”

Alisson punished for playing it out

Alisson has more than enough credit in the bank to allow for a slight error in judgment to pass without comment. But having said that, the goalkeeper holds himself to such high standards that this one does come as something of a surprise.

The goal obviously wasn’t totally the Brazil stopper’s fault. Depending on your point of view, some will blame Van Dijk, others Mac Allister.

But although both were guilty of sloppiness – Van Dijk perhaps much more so – we think Alisson does share a large portion of the blame.

The position he came out and passed the ball to his centre-back from wasn’t the issue. We see Ali in those kinds of positions all the time. Rather, it was the pace at which he got back – or failed to get back – with.

Mac Allister recently described the goalkeeper as Liverpool’s slowest player. And in all honesty, if this is anything to go by, we can see what he’s getting at. Adingra is still a long way from goal when he picks up the ball and Alisson has plenty of time to get himself set for a potential shot.

But for whatever reason, the 31-year-old just doesn’t add any urgency at all to his retreat. Had he done so, he could likely have comfortably collected the Brighton man’s tame effort.

Not to worry though, Ali made a big one-handed save from the same player later in the game. A disappointing moment, but he’ll still save us far more than he costs us.
