21-year-old Liverpool loanee says he’s had ‘dream’ news this week

Liverpool youngster Owen Beck has reacted to being given his first international call-up for Wales.

The left-back, who is on-loan with Dundee FC in Scotland, was recently selected for the Dragons games against Gibraltar and Croatia later this month.

And speaking to The Athletic about potentially winning his first cap, Beck admitted he couldn’t quite believe what was happening.

“I froze for a second and then it hit me — this is a dream,” says the youngster. “I called my family and hearing how happy they were for me, was amazing. The amount of tickets people have been asking me for, we could sell out half the ground.

“I can give myself a bit of a pat on the back because I’ve overcome a lot with things not going to plan but I know it doesn’t stop, I’ve not made it.”

Things turning around for Beck

This is very welcome news after what has been a difficult year for Beck. Having made the breakthrough to the Liverpool first-team in 2021/22, the Welshman was expected to kick on last season.

However, a loan move to Portuguese side Famalicao failed to work out. Without making a single appearance, Beck cut short the spell after just a month and joined Bolton Wanderers in League One.

But while Liverpool teammate Conor Bradley was excelling for the Trotters, Beck struggled to get going.

After spending the opening months of the campaign with Bolton, the 21-year-old returned to the Reds in January.

From there, it was all about finding the right loan move. Beck has obvious talent and has impressed in his two senior appearances for Liverpool. But last season was almost a wasted year for him. This time, he had to get it bang on.

Thankfully, Beck appears to have done that. A move to the Scottish Premiership may not be the most glamorous on offer, but the full-back has so far played every minute of Dundee’s seven games this season.

As a result, he’s caught the eye of Rob Page and the Wales selectors. Kick on even further North of the border, and maybe he’ll yet catch Jurgen Klopp’s too. Congrats, Owen!
