Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was the last player to the leave the field at Anfield last night.
Szoboszlai has arguably been the star of Liverpool’s 2023/24 season so far. And although he started Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game against Leicester City from the bench, the Hungarian still managed to steal the show.
Having blasted in a superb strike to give the Reds a lead they never gave up, the Liverpool ECHO spotted Szoboszlai doing something of a victory lap at full-time.
They claim that the 22-year-old ‘saluted all four corners of the crowd’ as Anfield celebrated the 3-1 win.
Indeed, Szoboszlai was reportedly the final man on the pitch as he thanked the crowd and ‘soaked up the occasion.’ Anfield has a new hero, and he’s only just begun.
Szoboszlai salutes Anfield
Perhaps the best thing about Szoboszlai start at Liverpool is that it all seems to be coming so easy to him.
After his rocket last night, Jurgen Klopp even admitted to being surprised at how quickly the 22-year-old has become such a key player.
But you get the impression that Szoboszlai himself is not in the least bit surprised. Not at all.
Instead, the Hungary captain looks like he knows that this is the stage he was being prepared for all his life.
That doesn’t mean he’s arrogant, though. Liverpool’s No.8 does appear to be a supremely confident young man, that’s true. But you can also see why he’s captaining his country at such a young age. Szoboszlai is mature and supportive of his teammates.
You don’t get the impression that the former RB Leipzig man will get carried away. But at the same time, he’s obviously absolutely loving the adulation of his new supporters.
It’s early days, but right now it’s clear that they absolutely love him right back. Let’s hope for similar scenes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
