Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign reported Liverpool target Levi Colwill from Chelsea.

Colwill looks set to be Liverpool’s top target for a defensive addition this summer. Reports from yesterday even suggest that the Reds are now under the impression that the 20-year-old is keen to join them.

But according to journalist Nizaar Kinsella on Twitter, they’ll face competition from at least three Premier League rivals. Add into the mix that Chelsea want to keep Colwill, and it really looks like a tough one to win out.

“Tottenham another club that like Levi Colwill,” says Kinsella. “Currently in talks for Wolfsburg defender Micky Van de Ven instead but it could collapse.

“Chelsea’s stance is not for sale, he will join pre-season on Monday and they want renew his deal.

“Brighton, Liverpool and Man City interested.”

Spurs rival Liverpool for Colwill

If it’s going to be difficult for Liverpool to get Colwill out of Chelsea this summer, then it’s going to be near impossible for Spurs. You can pick any one of a number of reasons why.

Firstly, while the Blues are adamant that they don’t want to lose Colwill, they may be forced to change that stance if he pushes to leave. But what you can’t imagine they will do is sell him to an active rival.

Of course, Liverpool and Chelsea do have their own rivalry. It isn’t anything like the one they share with their London neighbours Spurs, though.

Sure, this doesn’t have the kind of ferocity of other local derbies across the country, but they still don’t like each other. For Chelsea to sell Colwill to Tottenham would kill them.

Secondly, Spurs don’t have European football of any description next summer. Neither do Chelsea of course, but this would surely play a part in the player’s thinking if he is to look for a new club.

And finally, unless Tottenham do bank a huge fee for Harry Kane, the Reds have deeper pockets than them. City do too, so in a straight fight, there’s no chance Spurs come out on top.

For what it’s worth, we don’t think Liverpool do here either. Unless something drastic changes in the next couple of weeks, we think Colwill stays at Chelsea.
