Mauricio Pochettino has said he will soon sit down with Levi Colwill to convince the defender to stay at Chelsea, with Liverpool interested in the youngster.

Speaking to the Guardian, the Blues manager detailed his plan for the England youth international when Colwill returns to Chelsea, with Pochettino saying: “I need to get a feel for him. I need to hear what he has in his mind. What he expects. And then, of course, for him to listen to what I expect from him.”

Football London recently reported that Liverpool had made a second enquiry to sign Colwill, who has already been subject to a £40m transfer offer from Brighton & Hove Albion, a bid that has since been swiftly rejected by Chelsea.

With Liverpool in the market for a left-sided centre-back, Colwill fits the bill perfectly for what the Reds are looking for. Yet Chelsea have so far been resilient on letting the 20-year-old go, even if Pochettino is yet to determine what his role at the club will be next season.

Indeed, there is a growing sense that Colwill could leave Chelsea at a later stage in the window if it is revealed that the defender will be a bench player for Pochettino, and this could be Liverpool’s ideal time to strike for the England youth international.

Given Pochettino’s youth policy, there’s a strong chance that the former PSG coach will give Colwill a chance to impress at Chelsea. And for Liverpool, the Argentine could be the sole factor in whether or not the Reds can secure a deal for the centre-back this summer.

As we know, Colwill wants to play regular football next season, and with Liverpool able to offer just that, Pochettino knows that he will have to do a lot to convince the defender to remain at Stamford Bridge instead of heading up north to Merseyside.
