Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has admitted that he’d love to see the Reds sign Levi Colwill this summer.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the Chelsea defender, who’s future remains uncertain. Latest reports suggest that the Reds are confident of getting the 20-year-old, despite Chelsea’s ‘not for sale stance.’
Colwill is reportedly looking for assurances over his playing time at Stamford Bridge. And speaking to TalkSPORT yesterday, Murphy said that although he doesn’t think the youngster would get that playing time at Liverpool, he’d still love to see him at Anfield.

“If his desire, which it sounds like it is and fair play to him, is to play more first team football because he’s just had the taste of it and a successful year at Brighton, then I admire that,” began the 46-year-old.
“But, although I’d love to see him go Liverpool because I’m a Liverpool fan and he’s a real quality player, why would you go there? You’re not going to play.
“Potentially he’s very, very good. [But] he’s not going to play over Virgil [Van Dijk] or [Ibrahima] Konate.”
Liverpool urged to bring in Colwill
Murphy probably represents a good deal of Liverpool fan’s thoughts around Colwill here.
Yes, we’d love him to sign, he’s a potentially top-class young defender. Meanwhile, at the same time, there isn’t really a way into the team for him right now.
If it’s a starting spot that he’s after, then he isn’t going to come in and take that straight away at Liverpool. With Jordan Henderson potentially on the verge of leaving the club, Van Dijk looks likely to be the new Reds captain.

That will only strengthen his already iron-clad claim as the club’s first choice centre-back. And a left-sided one at that.
As a result, Colwill’s only way into the team immediately would be if Jurgen Klopp changes shape. This has been suggested as a possibility, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s new role changing the way Andy Robertson plays at left-back.
Having a left-sided centre-back in Robertson’s position could add a bit more defensive stability when Trent steps into midfield.
But although a possibility, we’d say that sounds like an outside one. There’s still a very good chance that Klopp keeps things the same for the time being. If Colwill arrives, maybe that will change. For the time being though, we don’t see it happening.
