25-year-old now on the market for just £10m, after claims Liverpool were trying to sign him in January

Sheffield United are ready to listen to offers of around £10m for reported Liverpool target Sander Berge.

The Norwegian was heavily linked with a move to Anfield during the last days of the January transfer window. But despite an expectation that Berge was set to leave Bramall Lane, he ended up staying put.

It was just as well that he did, too. The 25-year-old was a key man in United’s successful push for a return to the Premier League. With just a year left on his contract though, Berge’s future is in a precarious position. And now, according to TeamTALK, his club have ‘reluctantly’ accepted that he won’t stay.

As a result, they’re claimed to be willing to do business at around £10m. Aware that they run the risk of losing Berge on a free in a year’s time, they’re reportedly ready to make a £12m loss on the Norway international.

There’s no direct mention of Liverpool coming back in for Berge this summer. However, there is said to be interest from a ‘number of clubs’ in England and Europe. In terms of value for money, you won’t find many better deals this summer.

Berge available for cut-price fee

Links to Berge in January were largely greeted with derision from Liverpool fans. It’s fair to say that they want to see their club aim a little higher in the transfer market.

However, the Sheffield United man does have plenty of qualities. It’s been disappointing to see him spend two years of his career in the Championship. He’s capable of playing at a much higher level.

Physical and energetic, Berge caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp while playing against Liverpool for Gent in the Champions League. The manager is aware of him and likes him.

As the Reds look for value for money in the market, £10m for a player like Berge is a steal.

That being said, you can only imagine the reaction to such a signing. Liverpool would surely be accused of lacking ambition and that would, in a way, be fair.

Nevertheless, there have as yet been no concrete links between the Reds and Berge this summer. So supporters shouldn’t worry.

We still think Erling Haaland’s international teammate could be a handy little signing, but he should be way down the list for Liverpool, even at £10m.
