Liverpool are still in with a chance of signing Mason Mount from Chelsea, as they go head-to-head with Manchester United.
Mount has long been reported as being towards the top of Liverpool’s transfer targets this summer. But with United seemingly jumping ahead of them in the queue last week, their hopes of adding him to their squad looked to be over.
However, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, that may now not be the case. Taking to Twitter yesterday, Plettenberg reported that Liverpool are actually still in the hunt for Mount. It’s simply now down to the player himself to decide which North West giant he joins. United do still look to be the new favourites, though.

“News Mount: Been told MUFC is pushing a lot! Ten Hag and the bosses share the same opinion about him: They definitely want him! Within the club all are convinced of him,” the journalist wrote.
“Understand he will decide between Man Utd or Liverpool. Price valuation at this stage: €45-50m [£39-43m] with bonuses included.”
Mount set to make his choice
As far as updates go, this is a little bit of a baffling one for Liverpool fans. It was reported last week that Mount had actually already made his choice over his next club – he wants to join United.
The only sticking point appeared to remain the fee. Chelsea are reportedly looking for as much as £85m to sell the player, who has one year left on his contract. Understandably, any potential buying clubs are demanding that asking price be lowered, significantly.
A fee more in line with the one Plettenberg is reporting would feel more appropriate. Should that be the eventual price Mount is sold for, you can understand why Liverpool were so interested in the first place.

Unfortunately though, it doesn’t seem like the 24-year-old is as interested in the Reds as they are in him. That’s a shame, as you get the feeling Mount could really shine under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp.
It’s also quite a novel occurrence for a player to choose United over Liverpool these days. The likes of Sadio Mane, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo have all reportedly chosen to join the Reds instead of their bitter rivals over recent years.
That Mount may buck the trend could be the first sign of the effect of Liverpool missing out on Champions League football.
Nevertheless, the Reds won’t be too perturbed. They look poised to move ahead with other targets. If Mount makes an unexpected U-turn, maybe Liverpool will put those other moves on hold. But we don’t see it happening.
