Erik Ten Hag is reportedly pushing Manchester United’s bid to sign Mason Mount, with the Red Devils manager keen to beat Liverpool to the Chelsea midfielder.

According to the Telegraph, the Dutch coach is eager to sign a dynamic no. 8 as part of United’s upcoming summer of spending, and Mount has been identified as one of Ten Hag’s prime targets for the window, though Liverpool are also interested.

The Reds have been strongly linked with the Premier League playmaker and have looked like the favourites to sign Mount for quite some time. However, United have recently taken the lead in the race to land the 24-year-old England international.

With a reported asking price of £70m, United qualifying for top-four has put the Old Trafford side in the ideal position to beat Liverpool for Mount due to the finances that come with competing in the UEFA Champions League. And as a result, Jurgen Klopp could now miss out on the midfielder.

Indeed, with Mount himself also leaning towards a move to Manchester, Liverpool’s attempt to bring the playmaker to Anfield could be dead and buried before they’ve even had a real chance to do anything. And Ten Hag now pushing United’s bid could spell doom for the Reds.

Mount looked destined to move to Liverpool just a mere few weeks ago. Yet football can change any narrative on it’s head, and United have managed just that with the Chelsea talent, who now looks set head to Old Trafford rather than Merseyside.

Whilst the news is a blow for Liverpool, the Reds can be assured that Mount isn’t the only target out there who can bring a creative spark to the squad, and at £70m, a cheaper option could be out there in the market just waiting to be found.
