Liverpool’s chances of signing Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton may have just got a whole lot better.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have installed Mac Allister as one of their priority targets this summer. As they look to revamp their midfield, the Argentinian has emerged as key option.
For now, their odds of making that happen have looked relatively good. The player himself is said to be keen, while good talks with regards to personal terms have reportedly already taken place, too.
But the one, pretty chunky sticking point is Brighton’s position on losing one of their best players. Up until now, the Seagulls have seemed unlikely to let Mac Allister go without a relatively hard fight. That may still be the case, but as per Romano’s Twitter update yesterday, they look to be already planning for a future without their No.10.
“Exclusive: Brighton are closing in on verbal agreement to sign Mahmoud Dahoud as free agent,” wrote the journalist. “Deal’s now very advanced, waiting to fix final details and then sign documents. Could be 3rd signing after Joao Pedro [done] and Milner [almost done] — if all goes to plan.”
As Liverpool fans will know after years of being linked with him, Dahoud is a central midfielder. With Milner also on the way in, that’s two players in that position being lined up. Either Mac Allister’s place is severely under threat, or he’s on his way out. We think we might know which it might be…
Dahoud set to join Brighton midfield
Obviously, Brighton bringing in Dahoud doesn’t have to be in retaliation to Mac Allister leaving. The deal also is yet to be confirmed. Despite Romano’s pretty impeccable record of calling these things, he can’t give official confirmation.
But for now, it’s hard to see it any other way. Dahoud is a lovely player, one who would have surely been a relative success at Liverpool had he been signed when the links surfaced some years ago.
The 27-year-old isn’t a like-for-like swap for Mac Allister though, and is clearly a little older than the World Cup winner, too.
Despite that, there’s hardly a need for a player like the Germany international if everyone stays at the Amex. They already have Moises Caicedo, Pascal Gross, Billy Gilmour, Jakub Moder, Julio Enciso plus youngster Yasin Ayari and veteran Adam Lallana.
Caicedo is, of course, another who could potentially leave. But as of right now, it’s still unclear exactly what will happen with the Ecuadorian.
Following this news from the ever-reliable Romano though, we think Mac Allister’s future has just become clearer. He’s surely set for a Brighton exit. With Liverpool said to be leading the way, we can only hope his next destination is Anfield.
That can’t be said with any certainty right now, but it looks like being closer than ever.
