Ally McCoist suggests he doesn’t want 24-year-old to join Liverpool this summer

Reported Liverpool target Mason Mount has been urged to stay at Chelsea under a new manager.

Mount is widely claimed to be right near the top of Liverpool’s transfer wish list this summer. The 24-year-old has had a difficult season amid plenty of upheaval at Stamford Bridge. But speaking to TalkSPORT today, pundit Ally McCoist said he’d love to see Mount stick it out at Chelsea.

“He’s [Mount] kind of lost his way a little bit, which is A) understandable and B) acceptable, in a club that’s completely lost their way,” began the Scotsman. “It’s natural that younger players are going to suffer from it and maybe not fight their way through it.

“Once Pochettino or whoever comes in steadies the ship a little bit, I would like to see Mason Mount still at Chelsea. Of course I would, yes.”

At the moment, it still feels unlikely that McCoist will get his wish. But with a new manager seemingly close to being appointed, there could still be an opportunity for Mount to be persuaded to stay.

No breakthrough in Mount talks

As we approach the final few weeks of the season, there’s still yet to be a breakthrough between Chelsea and Mount. Come June, the England international will have just a year left on his contract. With the Blues adamant that he won’t be allowed to leave on a fee transfer, it’s coming up to decision time.

Of course, a new manager coming in should give a little hope to Chelsea fans. Mauricio Pochettino looks likely to be the man in the hot seat and should bring fresh ideas to a club in pretty desperate shape.

Whether that’s enough for Mount remains to be seen. But given that most of the contract stalemate seems to be centred around wage issues, it may prove to be a false dawn.

In that case, the academy graduate looks set to be sold. And Liverpool look like being at the front of the queue.

That may not be McCoist’s preference, but on paper it would seem a great move for everyone. Providing the Reds can get Chelsea to climb down on their asking price, they’d be pulling off quite the coup. And for Mount himself the chance for a fresh start at a top club should be a positive, too. He’s well-suited to playing under Jurgen Klopp and could really kick on after a disappointing year.

Still in the balance then, but Ally might have to gear himself up for disappointment. We hate to say it, but that’s good news for us!
