It’s becoming more and more likely that ‘special’ player is going to sign for Liverpool

The prospect of Mason Mount signing for Liverpool this summer is becoming more of a real one.

Mount has seemingly been installed as the Reds top summer target, having given up on their pursuit of Jude Bellingham. And according to The Guardian, it’s now looking ‘increasingly likely’ that they’ll sign the Chelsea man.

Given their bloated squad and the near-certainty of missing out on Champions League football, the Blues are reportedly under pressure to sell players this summer.

As a result of Mount’s home-grown status, he is said to represent ‘pure profit’ in Financial Fair Play terms. This, plus his precarious contract situation, make him a likely candidate to be sold.

Other reported Liverpool targets Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill are also claimed to be under threat. There’s said to be ‘plenty of takers’ for both.

Mount edges closer to Liverpool

Up until last week, it had indeed been looking like Mount was destined to end up at Anfield ahead of next season.

There was then a little bump in the road, with Chelsea reported to have gained confidence that he’d extend his deal at Stamford Bridge.

But with the end of the campaign nearing, there doesn’t appear to have been any movement in that regard. Time is now running out for Chelsea.

Obviosuly, that’s good news for Liverpool. In need of English players to fill their home-grown quota, it would be quite the coup to land Mount. He may not have had the best season, but he’s still a ‘special’ player on his day – just ask Declan Rice.

Under Klopp at Liverpool, there’s a feeling that the 24-year-old could be somewhat reborn. Offering the legs and tenacity that the Reds badly need in the middle of the pitch, Mount might just be the perfect signing.

Optically, that will probably depend on the fee Liverpool end up paying if they do sign him. £70m has reportedly been floated by Chelsea, but with one year left on his deal that sounds like a Todd Boehly fantasy. If the Reds can bring him in in the £40-50m bracket, they’ll have every right to be pleased with themselves. It’s looking good.
