Reported Liverpool target Mason Mount looks set to leave Chelsea in the upcoming transfer window.
Mount appears to be one of the Reds primary targets as they look to bolster their midfield this summer. And according to The Times, the England international’s time at Stamford Bridge is ‘likely’ to come to and end in the coming months.
With just a year to go on his contract, Mount and Chelsea have been unable to agree to terms on an extension. After claims that they’ve hit a ‘stalemate,’ player and club have reportedly not discussed the matter since February.
Chelsea’s Mount hopes hanging in the balance
Over recent weeks there have been plenty of mixed messages surrounding Mount’s potential extension. Although the overriding feeling is that it’s too late for Chelsea, the door doesn’t appear to be closed just yet.
Until it all becomes official, they’ll likely still hold out a little hope that the 24-year-old will buckle and agree to compromise on his demands. In the meantime, Liverpool will continue to hover.
What’s encouraging is that Chelsea clearly want Mount to stay. While that may increase the likelihood of them upping their efforts to get him to sign on, it also shows that he’s still highly regarded despite a poor season.

So regarded is he, in fact, that Chelsea reportedly want £70m to sell Mount this summer. From our point of view that’s an awful lot to ask for a player who’s scored just three times this season and has a year left on his contract.
As a result, Mount leaving may still depend on how much Todd Boehly and co are willing to bend. They’ve quite publicly decided that they won’t let players leave on free transfers from here on in. So, if Mount can’t agree to a new contract then he’ll simply have to be sold. They have no cards left to play.
Liverpool know that, and it’s why they seem to have such confidence that he’ll be at Anfield come next season. As things stand, there looks like a real possibility that he will be. At the very least, he’ll no longer be at Chelsea.
