Paul Merson blown away by what £55m reported Liverpool target did this afternoon

Reported Liverpool target Matheus Nunes left Paul Merson speechless with a stunning strike for Wolves this afternoon.

Nunes has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, as the Reds look to bolster their midfield. It’s been a slightly underwhelming season at Wolves for the Portugal international, but he showed all his class with a wonder-goal against Chelsea today.

Smashing a bouncing ball across Kepa and into the far top corner, Nunes scored the only goal of the game to hand Wolves a 1-0 win. Commentating on the game for Sky Sports, Merson couldn’t quite believe what he’d just seen.

“Nunes has scored it Jeff and what a goal this is, he couldn’t have scored a goal like this before in his life!” raved the pundit. “Ball gets played in from the left, it’s a great little flick on, it just goes past Costa but it goes right to the far post, just inside the box. It bounces and he hits this volley across Kepa into the far corner, you couldn’t believe it, what a goal!

“He’s a good player this Nunes. It comes, cleared by Koulibaly, one bounce and oof, far corner, what a goal 1-0 Wolves.”

Nunes shows why Liverpool like him

Liverpool had been linked with a move to sign Nunes during last summer’s window. Had he have joined the Reds back then, there wouldn’t have been too many complaints.

But since moving to Molineux, the 24-year-old hasn’t really shown why Liverpool should come back in for him. As a result, Reds fans have been rightfully underwhelmed by continual reports suggesting they see him as the answer to Jurgen Klopp’s midfield problem.

Certainly, with figures like £55m being bandied about, you feel Liverpool could find better value elsewhere.

Nevertheless, this piece of quality was a timely reminder of what there is to like about Nunes. He scored a similarly magical goal for Sporting this season before joining Wolves. When was the last time a Liverpool midfielder scored a goal resembling anything like a screamer?

Of course, it should also be put into context. After 31 games that was Nunes’ first goal for the Midlands side. It would be wrong to paint him as a goal scoring midfielder. He obviously has this in his locker, though.

After recent reports that Liverpool have cooled their interest in him a little, it will be interesting to see what happens this summer. They clearly have him on their shortlist. If he can register one or two more moments like this between now and June, perhaps the Reds’ interest will be reignited.
