Fiorentina are looking to ‘block’ reported Liverpool target Sofyan Amrabat from leaving the club this summer.
Amrabat had looked for all the world like he’d earned himself a big January move after an astonishing World Cup with Morocco. But despite some big-name suitors being reported, he ended up staying in Florence.
And now, as per Spanish outlet Sport, the Italian side are keen for him to stick around even longer. To that end, Fiorentina are said to be pushing hard to tie Amrabat down to a new, four-year contract.
The player himself is reportedly set on leaving, though. With Barcelona claimed to have ‘not forgotten him’ and Liverpool also said to be still in the mix, Amrabat has other options.
As a result, it’s reportedly ‘unlikely’ that Fiorentina will reach an agreement on new terms with the 26-year-old. Amrabat currently has just a year left on his current deal. But with La Viola retaining the option for another season, they’re under no immediate pressure to sell.
Amrabat still of interest to Liverpool
At one stage during the January transfer window, it looked likely that Amrabat would end up at Liverpool.
He had reportedly been of interest to Jurgen Klopp prior to his displays at the World Cup. The Moroccan’s ‘exceptional’ turn in Qatar then really cemented the idea that he could be useful to the Reds.
But as the month went on, Fiorentina’s demands seemed to grow and grow. That’s only fair when you’ve got a player wanted by the likes of Liverpool and Barca, we suppose.
In the end, the Florence club got their way. Amrabat stayed and has aided their Europa Conference League campaign, leading them to the quarter-finals.
On the international stage, Amrabat also sent a reminder of just how good he can be last night. Coming up against Brazil, the former Hellas Verona man helped Morocco to an unlikely 2-1 win. Another major scalp for the Atlas Lions.
Just in case Liverpool had forgotten, that was another demonstration of why Amrabat may still be worth pursuing. By the sounds of things it won’t be easy to get him out of Fiorentina, but where there’s a will there’s a way.
