Jurgen Klopp should be doing everything he can to sign Chelsea’s Mason Mount for Liverpool.
That’s the view of former Reds striker Dean Saunders. Speaking to TalkSPORT today, Saunders claimed that Liverpool should be all over Mount’s current contractual impasse at Chelsea.
“Mason Mount, Liverpool should sign him – or Man United. I think his dad’s doing his contract, they can’t get it sorted, the door’s open. Imagine Liverpool had Bellingham and Mount in midfield? Two good players,” said the pundit. “If you want to be up there competing, you’ve got to put your hand in your pocket.”
Although Liverpool would surely be signing Mount as a midfielder, Saunders believes he would thrive playing off the Reds front three. Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah et al.
“I think he should go to Liverpool. You can slot him in there sort of joining in with the front three, getting on the ball. He’s got a good football brain,” insisted the 58-year-old.
Mount rumours continue to gather pace
By now, the Mount to Liverpool train has people clinging onto the sides of it it’s so full. The idea certainly seems to be gathering plenty of pace.
At this stage, it would seem that that’s what it remains – an idea. Stan Collymore has claimed that talks have already begun between Liverpool and Chelsea. But that has yet to be confirmed by any other outlet.
Instead, it basically seems like Liverpool are keeping more than a close eye on whether Mount signs a new deal.
With the 24-year-old’s own talks with Chelsea supposedly on ice until the end of the season, now is the time for the Reds to make their pitch.
It has been reported that Mount wouldn’t necessarily take too much convincing to join Liverpool. With a fee now being tentatively mooted at £50m, it seems like a deal can be done.
As for where to play him, Saunders makes some decent points here. The England man does have a good football brain and is handy at linking up with forward players around him. But you get the feeling that Jurgen Klopp is eyeing Mount to be a roving midfielder in the same way that he used Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at his best. One thing’s for sure, this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing of it.
