Reported Liverpool transfer target Cody Gakpo will definitely leave PSV at some point during 2023.

That’s the view of former Reds winger Bolo Zenden. Speaking on TalkSPORT today, Zenden was asked about the prospect of his countryman moving to the Premier League.

“I’m not sure if PSV can keep him after this World Cup in the winter transfer window, or will he still finish [the season] at PSV and go in the summer. But one thing’s for sure, this is going to be his last season at PSV,” insisted the 46-year-old.

“He’s definitely got a bright future. He’s strong, he’s able to dribble, he’s not backing out of any situation. But of course, you have to be mindful that he’s still a young player, he still has to develop. Is he capable of that? I think he is. It’s logical to be making the next step now at his age, to go and perform at another level.

“He’d be a great addition to the Premier League.”

Gakpo poised for Premier League move

It’s important to note that this is simply Zenden’s opinion. There’s no suggestion that he has any inside information on any deal for Gakpo.

But by now, his view can be seen as a pretty universal one. It’s also worth pointing out that Zenden is a former PSV player, who probably has a decent handle on goings on at the club.

He is, of course, a former Liverpool player, too. Despite this, and Liverpool’s reported interest, the retired winger wasn’t asked specifically about a potential move to his old team.

Regardless, it’s clear that Zenden thinks Gakpo is ready to challenge himself in the Premier League.

By several accounts, Liverpool think so too. There have been claims that the Reds have gone as far as scheduling discussions with his agents.

These talks are said to be slated for the conclusion of the World Cup, where Gakpo is shining. However, after suggestions that Manchester United are taking the lead in the race, maybe Liverpool need to get a move on.

According to Calciomercato, Gakpo will be available for around £43m during the January window.

As Holland look set to continue their World Cup adventure beyond the last-16, that price may keep on rising. If Liverpool don’t feel like paying it, you can bet that someone else will.
