Manchester United are further along than Liverpool in the race to sign Cody Gakpo, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Taking to his Daily Briefing on Substack, the reporter has lifted the lid on the 23-year-old’s transfer situation ahead of the winter window.

“Manchester United are one of 3-4 clubs in the running for Cody Gakpo, who has a chance of leaving PSV this January,” he claimed.

“The Dutch club’s original plan was to sell Gakpo next summer, but his superb performances at the World Cup could change that.

“Man Utd have been in contact with Gakpo’s agents, but it’s not true that Liverpool have held talks yet, and there is nothing scheduled, even if there is sign of growing interest.”

As per Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer, PSV are set to demand just £45m to part ways with the attacker.

Liverpool lag behind in Gakpo race

Over the summer, Gakpo became tantalisingly close to joining United. He even admitted that he thought the move was all but done, with the club then proceeding to sign Antony from Dutch rivals Ajax.

On deadline day, the 23-year-old received offers from Leeds United and Southampton, which he ended up declining as he deemed them as rushed decisions.

This has fallen in Liverpool’s favour. After a sensational start to the season in which he has bagged 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games, the Reds have been alerted to his presence.

Using the World Cup as a means of scouting the winger, the Merseyside outfit now seem set in their assessment. Having broken history out in Qatar as the first Dutchman to score in their first three games of a World Cup tournament, Gakpo has really proven himself at the top level.

At just £45m, the 23-year-old is an absolute steal. With a decade left at peak performance, this is a long-term investment waiting to be made.

Therefore, Liverpool should really step-up in their pursuit of the PSV player.
