Liverpool are ready to begin talks with the agent of Cody Gakpo once the World Cup has finished.

That’s according to Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer. Writing on Twitter, Timmer claimed that the Reds are one of a number of clubs waiting to negotiate for the Dutch international.

Although the player is reportedly focused on the tournament in Qatar for now, he’ll be ready to come to the table at its conclusion.

As well as Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also said to be in the mix.

However, the journalist insists that it’s ‘not a foregone conclusion’ that Gakpo will leave PSV Eindhoven. The Eredivisie side have reportedly set a ‘target amount’ of around £43m for the 23-year-old.

Gakpo living up to billing in Qatar

Gakpo had been dubbed as one of the up-and-coming stars to watch at this winter’s World Cup. So far, the forward has lived up to that billing.

Although Holland themselves have looked fairly uninspired, Gakpo has been an exception to that. The PSV man has bagged two of his team’s three goals so far.

They’ve been good goals, too. The first showcased his poaching qualities, as he nipped in-front of Edouard Mendy to score a speculative header.

The second highlighted just how well he can strike a ball, blasting home with his left-foot from outside the area against Ecuador. You can see why former Arsenal and United striker Robin van Persie called him ‘dangerous.’

It’s on this kind of stage that stars can take their reputation to the next level. With plenty of interest swirling around him already, Gakpo’s showings are likely to ensure that PSV hit their target amount.

Whether that’s in January or the summer, it now looks close to inevitable that the Eindhoven side will lose their captain.

All signs point to Liverpool being in the race when that comes to pass. The price doesn’t sound especially prohibitive to the Reds, but let’s see how hard they push with other heavyweights present.
