Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez scored a brilliant goal at the World Cup yesterday to underline just why Liverpool want to sign him.
The 21-year-old bent in a wonderful curling effort to put his team 2-0 up in a must-win game against Mexico. With the transfer window looming, the goal was a perfect reminder that Fernandez could be the midfielder that Liverpool are missing.
Although the Benfica man didn’t start the game, he certainly made a difference in his half an hour on the pitch.
Coming on with the score at 0-0, Enzo added a little bit of steel and invention to the Argentina midfield. As per Fotmob, the youngster made 22 out of 27 passes, won three out of five duels and completed his only attempted dribble.

Oh, and to top all that off, have we mentioned that he scored an absolute peach? A superstar in the making.
Fernandez continues rapid rise on the world stage
Fernandez is a name that has been cropping up in relation to Liverpool since the beginning of the season. Having only arrived at Benfica in the summer, he’s wasted no time in making a name for himself. Current coach Roger Schmidt has called his early season form ‘excellent’ via Record.
That culminated in the former River Plate star earning his first international call-up in September. In the end, his talents were too great for Lionel Scaloni to ignore.
Now on the world stage, he’s already vindicating the coach’s decision to take him.

The only downside of Fernandez’s rapid emergence is that Liverpool will now have plenty of top-level competitors for his signature.
Right now, it would appear that Manchester United are at the top of that list of rivals. However, since Cristiano Ronaldo’s premature exit, United find themselves having to recruit a new forward. That could perhaps clear the way for Liverpool.
That is, unless, one of the big Spanish clubs decide to swoop in. It’s no secret that Real Madrid in particular are looking for a new midfielder and aim to muscle in on the race for Jude Bellingham.
Maybe they’ll start to switch their attention to Enzo as Bellingham’s price continues to rise. If that ends up being the case, then that’s fine by us. But we’re greedy and to be honest, Liverpool could really do with them both.
