Liverpool have been keeping a watchful eye over the progress of new Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim that Liverpool have recently kept ‘a watching brief’ on the 21-year-old Argentine.
Fernandez joined Benfica from River Plate this summer. Since then, he has impressed as he takes his place in the Portuguese side’s midfield.
His early season form has included a stunning volley scored in the Champions League qualifying win over Midtjylland. Liverpool reportedly watch on with interest.

Argentinian press repeat Sky claims
Argentinian outlet Diario Uno have corroborated the claims from Sky. They report that The Reds sent scouts to watch Fernandez in Benfica’s last game – against Boavista on Saturday.
Liverpool’s talent spotters would have seen a good display from the young midfielder. As per Fotmob, the player completed 82% of his passes, won two out of three tackles, and was successful in two out of three dribbles.
This isn’t going to mean anything this summer, of course. Fernandez has only just joined Benfica, for a measly £9m at that.
It already looks as though when they decide to sell him on, they’ll perhaps get five or six times what they paid River Plate for him.

Indeed, Diario Uno report that Benfica have inserted a £102m release clause into their new man’s contract.
It’s unlikely that Liverpool would be entertaining the idea of paying close to at the moment. But should he keep up his impressive early form, The Reds could look to test the Lisbon side’s resolve next summer.
Liverpool have recently become big players in the Portuguese football market. If they see Fernandez as a standout performer in the league this year, there’s every chance they’ll try to bring him in.
Does anybody know if they need a midfielder, though?
