Kostas Tsimikas has claimed that Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘deserved’ his free-kick goal against Rangers last night.

Taking to Instagram stories after the game, Tsimikas reacted to Trent’s perfect set piece.

“You deserved it brother,” wrote the left-back, with a heart emoji thrown in for good measure.

Alexander-Arnold has had a tough couple of weeks. His name has been bandied about non-stop as a by-word for defensive liability. Well, he answered those critics in style on Tuesday night.

Trent hits back in style

If there was one player who Liverpool fans would have loved to score last night, it was probably Trent.

Darwin Nunez is desperate for an Anfield goal, and it would have taken the roof off if he’d got it last night. But the Uruguayan seemed happy enough with a much-improved display instead.

The other player in the squad who badly needed a confidence boost was Liverpool’s maligned right-back.

His critics will counter that the 23-year-old’s attacking quality has never been in doubt. What they want to see is Trent doing the dirty work on the defensive side of things.

But still, any time Liverpool’s No.66 does anything of this class it strengthens his claims for England.

Besides, Alexander-Arnold was also pretty good defensively yesterday, too. Rangers didn’t pose much of a threat for most of the game, that’s true.

Ryan Kent is still a slippery customer, though. But up against his former Liverpool academy teammate, the Rangers man had little to no joy.

Hopefully the goal and the all-round performance can have a galvanising affect on Trent. Liverpool staff had expected that he would raise his game after coming in for such stick recently. Early signs are that he’s living up to that expectation.
