Liverpool players Darwin Nunez and Thiago Alcantara were spotted celebrating together on the pitch at full-time last night.
In a video from TNT Brasil on Twitter, the two players could be seen head-to-head on the Anfield pitch.
Exchanging encouraging words between each other, a big smile was visible from Nunez in particular. Obviously relieved at putting in an improved performance against Rangers, the Uruguayan looked happy with his night’s work.
Great to see Thiago taking on his elder statesman role and supporting his slightly down-trodden teammate.
Nunez every right to be happy with improved display
This was by no means a Man of the Match display from Nunez or anything like that. But he has a right to feel happy with his performance last night.
Yes, he arguably should have scored, but his all-round game looked far, far tighter than we’ve seen so far.
Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise. Jurgen Klopp has so far resisted the urge to constantly start his big-money summer signing. Instead, Darwin has been forced to watch and learn from his more experienced colleagues.
This is an approach which has worked for Klopp in the past. The likes of Andy Robertson and Fabinho are living proof of that. The hope is that it will do again with Nunez.
If last night is anything to go by, reports of the Uruguayan’s demise have been a little exaggerated. Full of industry and endeavour, he looked a constant threat to the Rangers back five, working all across the forward line.
This was much more like the player Liverpool saw give them so much trouble in two games against Benfica last season.
It’s only one game, and he still needs to get his shooting boots polished off, but it’s encouraging.
With teammates like Thiago having his back, hopefully Nunez won’t lose confidence. Despite only being at the club a short time and not speaking any English at all, the 23-year-old is looking like a popular member of the group already. Keep it going, Darwin.
