Two things would need to happen for Liverpool to sign a midfielder, according to reports. The Reds are facing plenty of speculation.
This comes from the Athletic. They suggest that Liverpool will only sign a midfielder this month if both Jurgen Klopp and Julian Ward have changes of heart.
Thiago’s injury, likely ruling him out of five games, has increased pressure on the Reds to enter the transfer market again. It certainly didn’t help that Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all carried injuries and couldn’t replace him.
Thus there’s plenty of talk that Liverpool could look at a late signing to bolster their options. Only, that now seems very unlikely.
The Athletic’s report claims that both Jurgen Klopp and sporting director Julian Ward would need to have a change of heart for that to happen. We imagine Klopp is the most important of the two in that regard but Ward is unlikely to sanction any signing he doesn’t see value in.
And as things stand, neither of the two bosses see that value.
Liverpool unlikely to sign a midfielder
‘Value’ is the big focus here, we think. Liverpool entering the market now shows desperation and teams will look to take advantage of that – you’re not getting any discounts.
And one look at Manchester United’s ridiculous attempts to bolster their own midfield shows what the market is like right now. There aren’t many sure-fire wins available right now. Every potential signing has some sort of giant question mark hanging over him – and Liverpool don’t like that.

So, we’re not exactly sure who they’d go for, in other words. Jude Bellingham would be great and if he were available, Liverpool would move. But he isn’t. Matheus Nunes doesn’t seem to be particularly available, either. Nico Barella would cost a fortune.
Suddenly, you’re looking at a market below the elite level and Liverpool won’t see value in that. The only way that change of heart happens is if a top player suddenly becomes available. This late in the window, it’s hard to see that happening.
