Manchester United’s hunt for a midfield transfer will worry Liverpool. The Reds are reportedly ‘considering’ entering the market.
There’s a lot of talk right now that Liverpool could try and sign a midfielder. It comes as the Reds look a little disjointed there anyway, let alone with Thiago now out for a reported six weeks.
Fabrizio Romano shared what he believes is Liverpool’s stance on Monday. “Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool will consider a new midfielder if there is an opportunity on the market,” he wrote for Caught Offside.
Whether or not there actually is ‘an opportunity on the market’ is certainly up for debate. And that’s why one look at Manchester United and their own search will surely worry Liverpool.
Manchester United and their midfield transfer hunt
It’s not exactly a secret that United also want a midfielder. They’ve been linked with several throughout the window, principally Frenkie de Jong. Their pursuit of De Jong is largely on the fact that Barcelona need to sell him, though – not that the player is open to moving.
The Athletic detail the situation here – it’s a complex one that now involves potential legal action against De Jong’s contract and unpaid wages. The fact that United have stuck to this one for so long is a sign that the midfield market isn’t particularly strong right now.
Though, for what it’s worth, we have suggested Liverpool move for De Jong themselves. We wouldn’t call a move for him in this situation ‘ideal’, though.
But again, it comes down to what ‘available’ actually means. There’s little doubt, for instance, that Jude Bellingham is the most in-demand midfielder on the planet. Romano claims Liverpool did make calls about him this summer but he absolutely isn’t available.

United not moving for the likes of Nico Barella suggest he’s not available, either. While someone like Matheus Nunes – potentially the perfect player for Liverpool – has apparently rejected major offers this summer because he wants to stay with Sporting.
Now, United desperately need a new midfielder and that will see them compromise by signing a player who maybe isn’t ideal. Liverpool, though, do not have that desperation. If the ideal player isn’t available, they simply won’t sign anyone.
And judging by the situation in Manchester, that player really isn’t available this summer.
