Diogo Jota now publicly reacts to claims that Liverpool are trying to sign Darwin Nunez

Diogo Jota has given his reaction to Liverpool’s reported attempts to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

As per Mais Futebol, Jota was asked about Liverpool’s pursuit of the Uruguayan whilst on international duty with Portugal.

“I don’t know, I’m focused on selection, I have no idea what the signings might be,” said the 25-year-old. “I had the opportunity to play against him and he’s a good player, but I can’t say anything else at the moment.”

A poker-faced response from Jota, who’s place could be under threat from the potential new signing.

Van Dijk offers ultimate praise for Darwin

Jota isn’t the only Liverpool player who has spoken about Nunez in the past.

Speaking to Rio Ferdinand for his FIVE YouTube channel in May, Virgil Van Dijk named the 22-year-old as one of his toughest opponents.

“It’s a different type of striker that we face. Erling Haaland, but also Darwin, he’s a bit similar, very direct, quick, tall, strong and it’s quite difficult to play against those guys,” said the Liverpool centre-back.

If Virgil found it tough against him, we can only imagine the kind of struggles the rest of the Premier League’s defenders will have!

Exciting times at Liverpool

As of this morning, there has been no official announcement of a formal bid from Liverpool for Nunez. It does look likely that a deal will be done at this point, though.

Liverpool’s main rivals for the forward currently appear to be Manchester United. Darwin is reportedly keen to play Champions League football though. This will obviously give The Reds the advantage over their rivals in this department.

Fans are on tenterhooks as they prepare for Liverpool to smash their transfer record for the first time since 2018. And from both Van Dijk and Jota’s comments, it’s clear that Nunez is rated highly within the Liverpool squad, too,

Of course his arrival will likely be tempered by the sadness of Sadio Mane’s Liverpool exit. There’s no guarantee that Nunez can have the same impact at Anfield as the magic Senegalese.

All the same, it’s reassuring to see Liverpool move decisively to replace a key player. Fans may have to be patient as a new forward line gels together. But the signs are there that Nunez could fit perfectly. Exciting times to be a red.
