Liverpool saw their chances of signing Gavi collapse on Wednesday evening as Barcelona look set to sell his teammate instead. Manchester United will reportedly sign Frenkie de Jong.
It seems that Manchester United will sign Frenkie de Jong this summer. That’s according to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, who claims a deal with Barcelona is ‘95%’ done.
But this might actually carry a different blow for Liverpool. Barcelona are apparently selling De Jong in order to fund next season – this is a transfer that will reduce their financial issues. However, those are financial issues the Reds could have taken advantage of.
Gavi now seems further away than ever.
Liverpool see Gavi chances decline
Gavi is one of the brightest talents on the planet right now and a shining light at Barcelona. He’s also out of contract in 2023 and the Catalonians are struggling to get him to sign a new one.
Sport claim that has Liverpool pushing for a transfer, either this summer or in 2023. This De Jong news, however, makes that seem very unlikely.
For starters, selling De Jong and moving his wages on will make it far easier for Barcelona to bump up Gavi’s wages. We also find it very hard to believe that they’d sell the Dutchman unless there was a strong belief that Gavi would renew his contract.
It just feels very unlikely that Barcelona would set themselves up to lose both players in one summer – or even in back-to-back years.
We’re huge fans of Gavi, just like everyone else and he’s someone Jamie Redknapp labelled a ‘phenomenon’ this season. We’d go along with that and the potential for him at Liverpool remains enormous.
With this news, though, we think Liverpool’s Gavi chances have collapsed. It’s likely time to look elsewhere.
