Manchester United will sign Frenkie de Jong this summer, according to reports. This comes after claims that Liverpool wanted the player.
Barcelona need to make a big sale this summer in order to balance the books for next season, he says. De Jong is the one they’ll move as he can secure a big fee and they’re well-stocked in midfield even without him.
As Romero pointed out on Twitch, Barcelona boast as many as seven alternatives in centre-midfield. That means they can sell De Jong without any burning need to replace him.
But this is likely a blow to Liverpool. Sport reported back in February that the Reds had eyes on De Jong over a potential summer transfer. In fact, they were willing to spend ‘big money’ in order to get him, along with Bayern Munich.
It seems United got there first, however.
Manchester United to sign Frenkie de Jong
This one does sting a little. De Jong is a wonderfully talented player and we were excited to hear that Liverpool had some interest there.
We wrote back in November that he could be a fantastic signing as the long-term Gini Wijnaldum replacement. Instead, he’ll be United’s Paul Poga replacement.
And we do see why they’re moving for him. There’s the obvious link with incoming boss Erik Ten Hag, while they could use someone in the middle to control the ball. This is actually one of the remarkably few United signings that make sense.
There is a bit of a sense, though, that Liverpool have moved onto ‘bigger’ things. As talented as De Jong is, his progress has unquestionably stalled at Barcelona, even with Xavi labelling him ‘dynamic’ and claiming he’d be around for years.
There are reports linking Liverpool with players who are thriving in De Jong’s position, such as Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jude Bellingham. It’s very possible that they, rather than De Jong, are the Reds’ ultimate goal here.
