Frenkie de Jong could be available to sign from Barcelona, according to reports. Liverpool should absolutely watch this situation.
Sport put out a very interesting report on Frenkie de Jong this week. They explain that the Dutchman has no plans to leave Barcelona and would prefer not to.
However, the Catalonians are in a troublesome financial position. They’re looking to invest in their young players as a result – many of whom play in midfield.
Thus De Jong’s future is a little in doubt. Barcelona could move him on his a large sum to replace him with academy products. It certainly makes financial sense, with Pedri and Gavi breaking through.
Should Liverpool move for Frenkie de Jong?
If there’s any truth to this – and it does line up – then Liverpool should absolutely get involved. De Jong feels like the exact player they’re looking for.
He’s still only 24 and is an outrageously talented midfielder. De Jong can play the holding role or push forward, he’s magnificent against a press and progresses the ball like a veteran midfielder.
We can only imagine just how good he’d be with someone like Jurgen Klopp coaching him. One of the absolute best midfielders in the world, certainly.
And Liverpool could really use a midfielder like that. Jordan Henderson and Thiago are their best duo but both are now past 30 and have injury issues.
There are quality youngsters coming through in Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones but both are very attacking players. As an out-and-out midfielder, De Jong could lead the next era at Liverpool.
And there just happens to be room for him. Gini Wijnaldum left Liverpool for nothing this summer and the Reds didn’t replace him. We can’t really think of a better high-profile replacement than De Jong.
If De Jong truly is available, and Liverpool manage to get him, he’d quickly make the decision not to immediately replace Wijnaldum look ideal.
