Jurgen Klopp hints at newfound trust in Thiago that will worry title rivals

There appears to be a new trust from Jurgen Klopp in Thiago, judging by Liverpool vs Southampton on Saturday. The Spaniard scored in a 4-0 win.

We weren’t entirely sure what Jurgen Klopp would do against Southampton. The gameplan seemed obvious but the selection? Not so much.

Our initial prediction was a very strong XI – arguably, the strongest of the season. Klopp then seemed to pour cold water on that idea, however.

“Wednesday-Saturday is always a time where we have to really think about ‘how can we change?’,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com.

“Saturday-Wednesday is completely different, it’s a day more, that’s what you need. But Wednesday-Saturday, after all the games we played, we have to really think about.”

Judging by that, Klopp worried that those who played against Porto could also feature against Southampton. Our reaction to that revolved around Thiago – surely, with his injury record, he wouldn’t play?

And yet, the Spaniard started against the Saints. It suggests a newfound trust in Thiago and one that should worry Liverpool’s title rivals.

Thiago trust

Thiago has rarely – if ever – been fit for Liverpool since joining last year. He admitted in the summer that he battled a problem for all of his debut season.

And we’ve seen him struggle to stay fit this season, too. Right now, however, Thiago does look sharp and raring to go.

The fact that Klopp started him against Southampton suggests he is fitter than he has been, too. The boss was ready to leave out anyone who wasn’t ready for the quick turnaround in games, as he did with Joel Matip.

Thiago, though, started the game and played for an hour. He did well, too, passing with his usual expertise and scoring another goal.

This should worry title rivals, then, because Thiago is playing magnificently right now. He’s adding another dimension to an already dominant Liverpool side, controlling games and providing extra precision in attack.

We had a feeling that Thiago would soon explode into life – if he could stay fit. Klopp’s decision to start him against Southampton tells us there’s a trust that he can do just that.

And Liverpool, as a result, look even more frightening.
