'I couldn't sprint': Thiago quietly played entire season with injury

Thiago says he played the entirety of last season with an injury. The Spaniard kept it quiet from the public, however.

Thiago had a spell out with injury last season – quite a significant one. His first start with Liverpool against Everton on October 17th ended with a horrendous challenge from Richarlison.

The Brazilian recklessly caught Thiago around the knee with a lunge and was sent off for it. Thiago, though, wouldn’t play again for two months.

His return was slow. We didn’t see the best of Thiago for quite some time, though that was largely down to the club’s injury crisis. Fortunately, he ended it in style.

But what we didn’t know was that Thiago actually played the entirety of last season with a problem. It’s one that has troubled him for some time and things got progressively worse over the campaign.

Thiago reveals injury last season

“The last season I started with – from a long time before that – some pain up there in the hamstring, between the glutes, old pain,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I was never clean to play because I was always with that pain and there’s a point during the end of the last season that I started to feel [it] more and more. And with the national team, even I couldn’t sprint in some terms, I couldn’t do some actions.

“So I try to start the pre-season, always in agreement with the medical team, to [do] individual work to clean the area a bit more and to be without more pain.”

This goes a long way to explaining why Thiago wasn’t a regular for Spain at Euro 2020. He just wasn’t fit enough.

Outside of that, though, we’re not sure what to think of this. One the one hand, it’s very worrying that the problem hasn’t gone away – will Thiago be okay next season?

On the other, he was thriving despite the injury. How good can he be if Liverpool finally clears it up?

That promises to be a big question next season, then. Liverpool are going to be quite reliant on Thiago now that Gini Wijnaldum has left the club.

Let’s hope his body is up to that.
