Ousmane Dembele picked up an injury on international duty at Euro 2020. It surely rules out any chance of a move to Liverpool.
This summer was shaping up to be very interesting for Ousmane Dembele. He’s coming into the final year of his contract, meaning Barcelona need to make decision on him.
ESPN have claimed that the Catalonians gave him an ultimatum – sign a new contract or we’ll sell you. It’s a sensible move, of course, and one that AS believes left Dembele ‘destined for the Premier League’.
That belief comes largely from reports that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan. Sport reported that the Liverpool boss pushed for a loan move last summer, hoping to get his hands on the Frenchman.
And then the inevitable happened.
Ousmane Dembele out with injury
Dembele will miss the next four months after requiring surgery for a knee injury, per Barcelona. He picked up the problem playing for France at Euro 2020.
This will almost certainly end any desire from Liverpool to sign the player. It’s just one injury too many.
As we detailed here last year, Dembele’s injury history is horrendous. He’s suffered problem after problem, consistently halting his career.
But it did seem as though he was over them. The Frenchman played 44 games for Barcelona last season, demonstrating an ability to stay relatively fit.
That led to performances good enough that France recalled him – his first participation for his country since 2018. It really looked like Dembele was back to his best.
But this latest setback shows that just isn’t the case. Even at £44m, he’d be an enormous risk as his body just keeps breaking down.
Maybe he’s a risk worth taking if Barcelona cut that price quite dramatically – but they’ve already done that once. It’s hard to see them lowering it down to £20m and only then could a move really be justified.
So Liverpool can probably end their interest in Dembele. He’s a wonderfully talented footballer but not one that makes any sense for them.
It’s a real shame but these things happen in football.
