Ousmane Dembele v Juventus explains reported Liverpool interest

Ousmane Dembele explained reported interest from Liverpool with his display against Juventus on Wednesday. The Reds supposedly discussed an offer this year.

Ousmane Dembele had a notable game against Juventus. The winger got the opening goal of the game – his second in two Champions League appearances – and consistently threatened.

But in truth, he was hit and miss. The promise was there pretty much all game, with his pace and movement creating problems for Juventus.

The other side of Dembele was there, too, however. He made some poor decisions with his end product and looked very raw at times. Still, it was hard not to be encouraged by it all.

Dembele is a very talented player with the ability to damage any opponent. He’s just not quite at the elite level, though – but he could be one day.

And all of that tells us why Liverpool reportedly wanted the player this year.

Temporary interest

Sport recently claimed that Jurgen Klopp wanted Dembele on loan this year, with an option to buy. That backs up a claim from Fabrizio Romano – and you can read our thoughts on that here.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Watch Dembele against Juventus and you see why Klopp supposedly wanted a loan to buy. He’s a player that has enormous potential but, for whatever reason, hasn’t kicked on at Barcelona.

Perhaps that’s down to injuries, perhaps that’s down to something else. But it makes sense that Liverpool wanted to be sure he’s someone they can develop properly.

Because if he is, then you can be sure the Reds would want him permanently. He’s just not quite consistent or ready enough to justify a substantial commitment on, though.

Sport now say that Barcelona would accept around £45m for Dembele – but that could change quickly if he keeps up his form. At that price, you’d imagine Liverpool would be back in for him.

But the more consistent he shows himself to be, the more likely it is that Liverpool missed the boat.
