Report: No takers for Ousmane Dembele at £52m price

There are no takers for Ousmane Dembele at his £52m price, according to reports. That’s despite a huge price drop and Jurgen Klopp’s supposed ‘love’ for the player.

Marca claims that Barcelona will keep Ousmane Dembele for another season. That’s because no club has come forward to negotiate for the player, despite his price.

That price is €60m (£52m) – a significant drop from the €124m (£108m) Dembele initially cost. But it’s clearly not enough as no one is willing to match that former figure for the 22-year-old.

Including Liverpool, it seems, even though recent reports claimed that Klopp loves the player. Sport believed that Klopp was such a big fan of Dembele that he was pushing for an £80m move.

That’s clearly at odds with the Marca report, however.

What RTK has to say

We said back around the time of that Sport report that the £80m fee was just about justifiable. Well, according to Marca, literally no one agrees.

For a player with such potential, there has to be a pretty good reason for that. After all, Barcelona initially paid far more to sign him back in 2017.

That reason is almost certainly injuries. Dembele’s injury record is something to behold, in fact – so let’s take a moment to go through it.

Just looking at 2019, Dembele suffered seven injuries (all sourced from Barcelona’s official website). He was out for two weeks in January 2019 with an ankle problem, then suffered a slight left hamstring strain the following March. Dembele returned just a few days later but aggravated it further, ruling him out for nearly a month.

One month after that, Dembele injured his other hamstring. His left hamstring was the problem once again by August. That carried on into September, too. By November, his right hamstring was the problem, ruling him out for ten weeks to end the year.

2020 got even worse, in fact. Dembele suffered a serious hamstring tear in his right leg, ruling him out for six months (per the BBC).

So in short, Dembele is a massive risk. £60m for a player who could fall apart at any moment is just not worth it – even with his incredible talent.

We jumped the gun in saying Liverpool should move for him at £80m. All things considered, Dembele will never be worth anything close to price that again.
